The Afro in the Algorithm

A cynical reflection on whether Huey Freeman’s brand of revolutionary truth can survive an era of TikTok trends and AI-driven apathy.
The world didn't end in 2012; it just got weirder. More expensive. Noisier. I’m sitting here looking at a screen that glows like a radioactive slab of meat, melting my eyes as I type this, wondering about Huey and what he’d think of this weird online world we find ourselves in.
What does a ten-year-old revolutionary do with a TikTok account? Does he organize a digital sit-in against the Terms of Service, or does he just stare at the 15-second dances and realize the revolution won’t be televised because nobody has the attention span for a commercial break, let alone a riot?
I wonder what he’d say about "The Culture" now that it’s just a line item in a PE firm’s portfolio. Does he see the “activist” infographics as a movement, or just a really well-designed tombstone? Would he give up?
Would he find a way to hack the AI to tell the truth finally, or would he realize the AI is just as tired and cynical as the rest of us, realizing it learns from the rest of us. Does he still carry the sword, or did he trade it in for a standing desk and a subscription to a meditation app he never opens (don’t check my monthly expenses).
Is Woodcrest still white, or is it just "gentrified" now? Are there yuppies cosplaying as foreign becuase their distant grandmother living in Albania for 5 years before she immigrated. Is he mad about there being a Whole Foods on every corner or is he just happy that he can still buy food with the state of this economy. And does he still think the government is watching his every move, or is he more offended that they aren't even bothered to look anymore?
It’s all just ink on paper, even when the paper is made of pixels. The questions don’t change, the answers just get more expensive.
Sometimes I try to stay optimistic. I think Huey of all people would understand how we got here, and why were here. But then I realize who’s in office, and think Huey would probably be throwing bricks through a window at a riot right now with a white t-shirt sporting a giant black fist.
All I truly know is….. he’s probably sad he didnt support Obama.
And can we all just agree Regina King was before her time.
